from Press Release Of Earth And Air at The Painting Center, (2020): A painting is a scrim between the artist and the world – a way to process the tumult of our time. In this age of anxiety with the Pandemic literally looming “in the air” as well as social, economic and environmental upheaval, Herman began reaching out.  As she states, “In my studio, it has been impossible to blot out the news and even looking to the familiar inspiration of ‘Landscape’ usually a source of solace, now feels burdened with crisis.”

Herman sought grounding ever closer to home, stating: “As a city dweller, in the era of Covid, this has meant becoming involved with neighborhood vigils/ learn-ins in support of Black Lives Matter as well as turning to our communal back lot and starting a garden, forming pathways from found stones (as in Herman’s painting: “Found Path”) —while getting to know my neighbors, and of course, voting!”

Through her paintings, Herman meditates on the metaphorical and material clash of oil and water-based pigments often colliding to resist and occasionally emulsify into newly, re-imagined worlds.
